What is A Woman of Substance about?

At its heart, this is a story of revenge. Adapted by Katherine Jakeaways (The Buccaneers) alongside Roanne Bardsley (Hollyoaks), this series charts Emma Harte’s electrifying ambition to rise to the top.

An older woman wearing a long cream coat and patterned silk scarf walks through a marble courthouse hallway, carrying a large red handbag

Set in 1911, we meet young Emma as a poor housemaid in rural Yorkshire, serving the wealthy Fairley family. But even in those early days, there’s a burning drive behind her quiet determination. The story then sweeps forward to a glamorous future in New York but the trailer teases flashes of glamourous future in New York – high fashion, bold silhouettes, silk scarves and oversized sunglasses – where Emma makes her mission crystal clear:

“What I’ve dedicated my life to... is revenge.”

Spanning decades, continents and social divides, A Woman of Substance blends romance, betrayal, heartbreak and ruthless ambition. It’s about power – who holds in, who wants it, and what is costs to claim it.

What is A Woman of Substance based on? Is it an adaptation of the 1980s series?

Absolutely - this isn’t the first time the novel has hit the screen. Channel 4 originally adapted it back in 1984 as an Emmy-winning three-part series, starring the fabulous Deborah Kerr! The series became one of the channel’s biggest launches everrr at the time.
